The heart has an electrical timing system to provide for efficient pumping of blood through the heart. Disorders of this electrical timing system, are called arrhythmias. These arrhythmias can be generally divided into two groups, one group are the life threatening arrhythmias, the second group are the "low probability" of dying arrhythmias.

The life threatening arrhythmias are usually treated with implantable cardiac defibrillators, and sometimes pacemakers. Uncommonly, these arrhythmias are treated with electrophysiology studies and ablation.

The "low probability" of dying arrhythmias are generally treated with medications, electrophysiology studies and ablation, and sometimes pacemakers
